What made you decide to go into photography after you finished fashion school?
In the last year of my education I did an internship with stylist Roel Schagen, which brought me to a lot of studios and locations to style fashion shoots. I’ve always had a love for photography but this internship made me realize that this is what I really wanted to do.

We heard you have a bit of an obsession with cameras. How many do you have??
UUUUHM…. A LOT! I think at least 20, amongst which are 3 digital cameras. Apart from that I have all kinds of analog cameras, from small to big, from film to Polaroid.

You never just take 1 camera to a shoot, how many do you take?
I always bring my Olympus PEN. Next to that I usually take about 3 other analog cameras, of which one is always a Polaroid camera.

But you always have your Olympus PEN. Why?
The PEN is easy to use, small and therefore easy to take everywhere and in quality it absolutely matches the bigger SLR cameras that are out there. All settings can manually be changed and the touchscreen is terrific to point out exactly where you want the focus to be in the picture. I just started shooting with the 45mm lens Ideal for portraits because the focus is so beautiful!

The Olympus PEN is, next to an awesome high quality camera, also a fashion statement because of the cool retro exterior. I receive a lot of questions and compliments when I use the camera.

Where do you get your inspiration from?
Photographers like Lina Scheynius and Derorah Turberbille. I see a lot of images everyday because I follow a lot of blogs and go to exhibitions. Documentary photography can also be really inspiring to me, especially in terms of emotion, atmosphere and lighting.

How would you describe your photographic style?
I’m not at all a glamorous photographer. An image has to have emotion and purity. A certain authenticity that you can also find in documentary photography. It is always soft, natural and a bit romantic.

Do you always see everything with an eye for photography?
I often see things within a frame, like a composition. Especially with light. I always look at light. The way it enters a room or the way it lights something. Then I immediately see a model standing or lying there. Light is a very important part of my images. I even have a friend who sends me pictures sometimes and saying ‘I see Marieke Lighting here!’. The PEN makes it easy to capture exactly the light that I see with my eyes. The colors I get out of my camera are exactly how I want them to be.

You also have a blog, what is the function of your blog?
My blog is more playful than my website. At the site I only feature series but my blog is more like a collage of loose images that together really show who I am as a photographer. Because blogs are so booming at the moment, especially photography blogs, I see a lot of my images re-blogged on other sites, which in return generates more visitors to my own.

The electro pop band SSION (pronounced as “shun”) is well know for their crazy music video’s that have a “gay, punk rock equivalent of Forest Gump” vibe going on. SSION’s mastermind Cody Critcheloe formed the band in Kansas in 1996 and their first songs were released in 2003. Since then, they have been working together with Peaches, Liars and Scream Club.  TIP ONE

Speaking of bananas, bring bananas if you are on a festival with camping facilities. They are multi employable! You can eat them, put them in your ear when there is too much noise and the best part is they provide constipation when you eat more than three a day! Which means… you don’t need to go to the nasty toilets on the camping, which we all know, are quite disgusting at most festivals! Of course you can’t expect the organisation to provide cleaners for the toilets since you only paid 200 euro’s for a ticket.

TIP TWO

Besides underwear, bananas, a tent and maybe even a toothbrush, don’t bring anything useless. It’s embarrassing for a girl to carry a big ass suitcase down the field filled with “all possible cute outfits” and for a guy it’s even more embarrassing. It’s even worse when a chick is walking on heels on a swampy grass field. Besides the fact that it’s not comfortable it looks a bit sad. Everyone is messed up at a festival, they stink and don’t look like they could be shot by the Satorialist any moment so don’t panic about your looks, just get DIRTY.

 TIP THREE

If you don’t have any money to buy booze at the party, just bring your own. Ok, it’s quite illegal but just wear a burka where you can hide it underneath so no one will notice. If you aren’t able to get your hands on a burka you could also consider wearing big jeans and a XXXXL vest. We all know that the security at festivals suck anyways. Do some easy google-ing to see how to stick it under your garments the most efficient way. If the security accidently will notice, you’ll just hang up some weird story, don’t forget to do the puppy-eyes when you tell it! They are probably kind enough to let you pass!

TIP FOUR

Bring your own drugs. Please note, we’re not telling you to do drugs, don’t get me wrong! We’re big fans of going fully lunatic on Dextro energy and Kindercola but we get that is not for everyone. If you buy your own drugs before the festival you’re able to make sure you have the good stuff. You definitely don’t want the stuff that makes you crawling around  naked singing, “I’m a snail, I’m a snail”.  That will end up on Youtube. You don’t want that because everyone will de-friend you on Facebook after seeing it.  TIP FIVE

Since you’re not bringing your whole wardrobe and only underwear, bananas, a tent and maybe even a toothbrush, you have space left to bring duck tape. We all know the saying “If you can’t fix it with duck tape, you haven’t used enough”. That means you can fix ANYTHING with duck tape! If your tent is leaking, you can fix it. If you lost your shoes, you can simply make a pair out of duck tape. If you forgot to shave your legs you have your wax strips on a roll. With some leftover plastic from a sandwich you just bought you can even make a raincoat out of it! Awesome. Bring it.

TIP SIX

Don’t bring your super expensive iPhone to a festival. First of all there is a horrible line for charging the damn thing so you’ll never be able to do so, and secondly, you’re there with all your friends anyway so you don’t have to Whatsapp them that you are standing next to a hot chick: you could just scream that to them as well. It’s better to bring the holy Nokia 3310! They survived during you teenage years so they will definitely survive every moshpit you’ll enter, besides, the battery lasts till infinity.

TIP SEVEN

No festival has been a success if you haven’t broken a bone or two. This is just something to prove that you had the best time this summer and all your friends will think you’re awesome.  And a complete idiot. You could just break your nose, toe, and wrist…
NO, a nail doesn’t count!

 TIP EIGHT

Make sure that you sleep alone in your tent! Just bring a really, really small one so none of your friends will fit next to you, just make sure someone will fit on top of you. The point is, if you sleep with a friend who brings some monkey looking creature with him or her to your shared tent, you’re the one that needs to sleep outside. You don’t want that. No you can just bring everyone you like to your tent without concerning the night’s rest of your tent mate.

 TIP NINE

Be cleaver, put your swag on and make friends with someone from the organisation. If you play it right you can go backstage where the food and booze is free and the artists are walking by so close, you can almost touch them. OMG who doesn’t want that right? Smelling the fresh sweat from your favourite British band lead singer as he passes by backstage.

 TIP TEN

When the sun sets and the people are getting more and more wasted they probably won’t mind your feet anymore and will dance on them like it’s the stage of So You Think You Can Dance. You’re probably  too wasted to notice but if you follow this tip, you’re feet will thank you the day after. Get some glow in the dark stickers and stick them on your boots!
